Vivian took another small sip of coffee and glanced at her watch.

Ten minutes until three o’clock.

Ten minutes until she was scheduled to meet with whoever had sent the anonymous note to the Palmchat Gazette office two days ago, offering ten thousand dollars in exchange for the emails Nina Holt had given them. Shifting in her seat at the small bistro table outside the Cup-O-Joe coffee shop, Vivian surveyed the residents and tourists strolling along the wide pedestrian walkway that bisected the open air mall.

A major tourist attraction, the mall did brisk business, even in the middle of the day during the work week. The shopping mecca teemed with people meandering in and out of high-end shops like Hermes, Gucci, Chanel, Dior, and Rolex.

A lively calypso beat, bright sunshine, and a glorious view of the sky created a festive tropical atmosphere, but Vivian was anxious, not sure what to expect, not sure she was prepared for what was about to happen.

After reading Beanie’s email, Vivian had sent Beanie a text, telling him they would discuss the note first thing the next morning, and then she and Leo had headed inside. After showering, they’d discussed the issue while preparing a salad to go with the frozen pizza Leo had put in the oven.

Who could have sent the note? How did that person know they had the emails that had been sent between “broke toe” and “pops321”? Vivian initially suspected Nina Holt. The flaky IT chick might have regretted her hasty decision to hand over the emails. She might have thought she should have asked to be compensated and now she’d come up with some silly scheme to get the emails back so she could turn around and offer them to the paper again—for a price.

Leo had shot down that theory. He believed that whoever sent the note was either broke toe or pops321. Stevie’s cousin was still out of town, and they didn’t know the names of the email address owners, but Leo figured Beanie’s story, SABOTAGE PLOT LINKED TO ENGINEERS MURDER? had spurred a panicked reaction from one of the unknown saboteurs.

The story featured Beanie’s strong speculation that Harold Otty had illegally obtained a series of emails which highlighted a plan to sabotage the construction of the new PL&P administration building, scheduled to begin next month.

Vivian’s phone beeped, and she checked the display screen. A text from Leo. You okay, babe?

Directly across from the coffee shop was the ice cream parlor where Leo waited, sitting inside at a bar facing the plate glass where he could see her, and she could see him.

Doing fine, texted Vivian, deciding not to tell Leo that she was nervous. When she and Leo had decided to find out who had sent the anonymous note, they’d agreed that Vivian would meet the person alone while Leo watched from a not-too-distant distance.

Vivian had no intention of handing over the emails for cash, but she hoped to question the person. Now she wondered if their decision to show up at the meeting location had been a mistake.
